Students looking for the skills to compete in today鈥檚 data-driven world will find the perfect fit at 海角社区 with the announcement of a new bachelor of science in data science degree.
The program emphasizes the creation, analysis, and use of data-driven knowledge to influence the decisions of businesses, communities, and policymakers.
LSSU is now accepting applications for new and transfer students to start in the fall 2022 semester.
In this new program, students will choose one or more concentrations for their degree. There are currently seven concentrations: bioinformatics, business analytics, chemistry informatics, geosystems modeling, health informatics, robotics, and spatial analytics.
鈥淭his new degree provides a solid core in mathematics, data manipulation, artificial intelligence, and algorithms, combined with significant depth in the application areas. Students will gain the skills that are desperately needed in today鈥檚 society,鈥 said Dr. Christopher Smith, associate professor of computer science, who led the creation of this program. 鈥淒ata drives the world. My colleagues and I built this program to fit both student interests and global needs.鈥
鈥淥ne of the strengths of our Data Science Program is its interdisciplinary curriculum,鈥 stated Dr. Kimberly Muller, dean of the College of Innovation and Solutions. 鈥淪tudents are equipped with the practical and theoretical knowledge to work with big data sets and then gain experience applying that knowledge in a concentration discipline. Very few programs offer as broad a selection of specializations.鈥
鈥淭his program epitomizes our commitment to social mobility, as data scientists are in high demand and have high entry-level salaries,鈥 explained Dr. Lynn Gillette, provost and vice president for academic affairs. 鈥淥ur faculty designed a program to meet market needs while building upon existing strengths from multiple disciplines at LSSU.鈥
鈥淒ata science is used globally to tackle some of the biggest issues of modern times,鈥 said LSSU President Dr. Rodney S. Hanley. 鈥淥ur faculty and students, applying the student-centered approach for which Lake State is known, will use data tools to drive innovation.鈥
